Hawaiian Salt
Hawaiian Old Time Red Alaea Sea Salt and Old Time Sea Salt
Hawaiian Sea Salt is the salt used by Hawaiians to preserve and cook their foods. In fact, it is the salt of choice when one is curing and preparing raw salmon to be used in the recipe for lomi lomi salmon, which is one of the dishes served at a Hawaiian luau (see our recipe section for this dish).
This salt is made up of medium sized grains, which have been created by evaporating sea water with the sun. It seems just the tiniest bit milder in flavor than regular table salt to our taste buds, but you will have to be the judge of that yourself.
The white Old Time Sea Salt comes straight from the ocean to your table, while the Old Time Red Alaea Sea Salt is actually white Old Time Sea Salt that comes first from the sea and then has an organic red clay added to its surface, after which it is baked so that the color will stay. The Red Alaea Sea Salt is the more traditional of the two and is the most popular of the two salts among Hawaiians. But, take it from us, as salts go, both of these Old Time salts are yummy!
